Food Essentials… useful to have in your larder… and a few basic recipes…

Food stuffs:


  • Onions, garlic, bag of potatoes
  • Rice, pasta, pasta sauce, pesto, canned tomato, kidney beans, baked beans, any canned beans, cous-cous
  • Butter, sugar, salt, pepper, flour, eggs, BREAD, CERIALS, MILK
  • Cheddar cheesecreme fraiche or cream cheese (philadelphia) or fromage frais, mozzarella, feta (salad cheese), cottage or curd cheese
  • Mayo, ketchup, mustard
  • Lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, celery
  • Lemons or limes for salad dressing or lemonade
  • Carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, green beansfrozen peas, frozen fries / chips
  • Canned tuna, bacon, lardons, sausages, ham, chorizo ring
  • Sunflower oil, (virgin) olive oil, (balsamic) vinegar
  • Soya sauce, teriyaki sauce, ground cumin or coriander, parsley, paprika
  • Curry paste or powder, can of creamed coconut, fresh ginger or ginger paste, dried chillies
  • Pickled cucumbers / gherkins (any pickle is a great cure for Hangovers!) for burgers
  • Tortillas sealed keep for a long time or can make leftovers into chips
  • Rice Pudding, hot chocolate, nutella, biscuits
  • FRUIT: bananas, apples, oranges, grapes, etc. KEEP A FRUIT BOWL TOPPED UP!, and look out for ANY fruit cheaply, reduced, on offer, on markets before closing…
  • Most affordable MEATs: chicken drumstick, legs, thighs, whole chicken, pork, mince, burgers, meatballssausages, thin beef steaks, burgers, stewing meats, stir-fry meats
  • Affordable FISH: frozen scampi, prawns, mackrel fillets, salmon, fish fingers, smoked mackrel, canned tuna, canned mackrel in tomato sauce, canned anchovy (for boiled egg and anchovy, pizzas, pastas), skinless boneless sardines for those vital omegas!

*FREEZER *FRIDGE *DARK COOL STORAGE + ROOM TEMPERATURE
*Don’t store open cans in fridge for more than 48h, once opened it is better to transfer into plastic container and refrigerate.
*Don’t keep cooked pasta, potatoes or rice for more than 2 days, the starch goes off…


FRUIT & VEG

Look out for your 5 a day reduced, on offers, in markets, or as your recipe requires…

*Keep an eye out for great offers on stir-fry mixes, rather than buying individual ingredients…
*Use fresh veg for salads and stir-fries, old veg for stews, roasting and sauces…

Jamie Oliver’s Sweet Potato fries – eat lots of Sweet Potatoes, it is a SUPERFOOD!

Basic SALAD DRESSING: 1/2 teaspoon sugar, pinch of salt, 1/2 lemon / lime or 1 tablespoon of balsamic or other vinegar, 1 teaspoon of olive oil. To this you can add mustard or mayo or chopped shallots, chopped herbs, chopped or crushed chillies, capers, yoghurt, horseradish, cream, honey, soya sauce, and voila!, it’s no longer basic! …

Pesto and Nandos MARINADE sauces are easy and super for most meats, marinate before cooking, otherwise make your own using a sensible combination of orange / apple juice, lemon / lime juice, cider, beer, chopped herbs, chopped shallot, onion, olive oil, ground cumin, coriander, dried or chopped herbs and spices, crushed garlic, ginger, honey, soya sauce, chinese or other wine, teriyaki sauce, curry paste, curry powder, paprika, ketchup, mustard, yoghurt, creamed coconut, barbecue sauce, jerk sauce, marmalade?… what can I say…the possibilities could be endless… 🙂

…salt & spread some marinade over potatoes, sweet potatoes, chopped onions, carrots, parsnips, courgettes, peppers, leeks, fennel, aubergines, or whatever VEG & ROAST…

basil-tomato-pizza-400x400   EXTRA PIZZA TOPPINGS:

For pepperoni pizzas: slice 1 small onion, 1/2 pepper into thin slices, cover in tablespoon of olive oil, mix, spread over pizza…

Other pizza toppings: bacon lardons, pancetta, ham, pineapple, chorizo, fried mince, chicken, mini meatballs, sliced or canned mushroom, canned sweetcorn, avocado slices, courgette slices, spring onions, basil leaves, crushed chillies, lumps of cream cheese, wet spinach leaves, an egg, anchovies, olives, mozzarella, ricotta…
